NBA All-Star Vlade Divac Hosts Summer Basketball Camps In China
In Joint Effort With NBA Cares And Li Ka Shing Foundation
Divac Youth Basketball Camps Visit Shantou, Beijing, Shanghai
and Anshan with Guest Coach NBA All-Star Peja Stojakovic

BEIJING, CHINA. JULY 21, 2006 — Former NBA All-Star Vlade Divac will join efforts with NBA Cares and Li Ka Shing Foundation (LKSF) to host four inaugural Divac Youth Basketball Camps in China this summer, announced by the Group Seven Children’s Foundation, the LKSF and NBA today. The first camp will tip-off at Shantou University on August 3 and run through August 6, the second camp will be held August 9-11 in Beijing; the third camp will be held August 12-14 in Shanghai and the program will finish with the Anshan camp held August 16-18.

This is the first time NBA All-Star Vlade Divac is hosting youth basketball camps in China, inviting youths age 10-18 to join and experience authentic NBA basketball fundamentals and skills training. Vlade will also invite a special guest coach to the camps – NBA All-Star player Peja Stojakovic. The camp not only invites basketball athletes to participate but also to all students who have an interest in sports.

The Li Ka Shing Foundation believes sports is an integral part of education and learning and is sponsoring the program by providing opportunities and scholarships for over 300 youths from Mainland China and Hong Kong to experience world-class basketball training. The Foundation hopes that participants will have fun in sports and learning.

Scrimmages will be held on the first morning of each camp to divide campers into teams. They will then receive training in basketball drill stations on skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling and individual defense. A variety of competitions will be held each day after the training session, either as individuals or in teams. The competitions vary from 1-on-1 basketball contests to free-throw or 3-point shooting contests.

The program of Shantou University Camp is all-rounded. Other than basketball training, the 80 campers will attend leadership seminars hosted by Vlade Divac, as well as the English and Team Leadership Enhancement Course provided by the University. The highlight and grand finale to the Shantou camp will be giving participants a chance to travel to Guangzhou for the first game of the China Basketball Challenge, witnessing world class basketball in the match-up between the US and China Men’s National Teams on August 7th. On the same day, the camp will reach out to the community by holding a two-hour basketball clinic for underprivileged children in Guangzhou.

Special Olympics athletes will be invited to participate in the 3-day camps in Beijing, Shanghai and Anshan. Campers will also participate in leadership seminars hosted by Vlade Divac, with the aim to educate youths on the qualities of a true leader both on and off the court. “I am definitely excited to be back in China again. This time, not only as visitor but as a coach.” said NBA All-Star Vlade Divac. “The passion youths in China have for basketball provides a platform for me to reach out to youths from all walks of life, especially because basketball is a common language and transcends all boundaries. As a former player in the league, I hope to impart upon the campers authentic NBA training as well as teach them the importance of teamwork, fair play and hard work.”

“As part of our NBA Cares global goodwill initiative, this camp program is a wonderful opportunity to provide needy youth in China chance to experience authentic NBA basketball training directly from NBA All-Stars," said Mark Fischer, Vice President and Managing Director of NBA China. "We are delighted to join Vlade and Peja, Group Seven Children’s Foundation and the Li Ka Shing Foundation in these efforts to develop teamwork, leadership, and other healthy basketball virtues among youth in the respective Chinese communities hosting these camps. We see a great demand for such quality basketball instruction in China and look forward to holding many more similar programs here in the future."
